Johnny Van Zant from Lynyrd Skynyrd says rock and roll has no icons and has not for 20 years.

In the article in Ultimate Classic Rock Johnny says quote: "A wide man once told me that there's no guitar heroes in the last 20 years or 10 years, and that's probably true."

Guitarist Ricky Medlocke adds quote: "If you really stop and think about it, the last really big guitar hero was Eddie Van Halen, and that was back in the 80's...early 80's...that's a long time ago."

Are they wrong?  No. (With the glaring exception of Dave Grohl).  The fact is Rock and Roll is dying a slow death and for just this reason.  Kids need to see rebellion, attitude and most importantly they need to see true talent.  The current rock and roll landscape is devoid of all that.  Most of it does not even sound like rock.

Let's take it past just the guitarist and ask the question who are the greatest rock icons of all time?  Immediately names like:  Lennon, Mcartney, Jagger and Bono come to mind.  The fact is however that this is subjective.  What I put on my list might be downright offensive to you and vice versa.

So here is my top 10 list:

  • Jim Morrison
  • Johnny Cash (Yes he is country but he transcends genre)
  • Dave Grohl
  • Neil Young
  • James Hetfield
  • Kurt Cobain
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • Eddie Vedder
  • Keith Richards
  • Billy Idol

Yeah I know there are things in that list that are going to piss some people off, but in the spirit of Rock and Roll I don't care what you think!
