It's the middle of May 2025, and while you were sleeping over 3 million birds loudly flew over your weary head. Did you hear them?

Is it just me? Or did someone turn the volume up on the birds over the last month? I know that it's migration and mating season, but the bird songs were deafening in Brookfield and Torrington this morning. Usually, the world is silent when I leave for work at 4AM, but not today, there were loud whistles, songs, and trills coming out from every tree and shrub around me.

I pay attention and care about wildlife here in Connecticut, and I've listened carefully to Lights Out Connecticut and their campaign to make people realize that light pollution harms the millions of birds that fly over our head each year. Lights Out CT has strongly urged us residents to turn off any unnecessary indoor or outdoor lights during the Spring and Fall migration. The 2025 Spring migration is happening right now, until the end of May 2025. You can keep track on what's happening a few thousand feet over your place with BirdCast, it's an online migration tracker. According to the latest data, over 3 million birds flew over Connecticut last night, at an average of 40MPH at around 1,600 feet up. As of May 11, 2025, an estimated 18 million birds have looked down at us and said "Ehhhh, let's keep going.'
