We all know Connecticut has its haunted mansions, graveyards, and ghost towns — but a haunted lake? That sounds like something out of a bad horror movie. According to Boat Mart, Gardner Lake in Salem, Connecticut, is one of the most haunted bodies of water in the entire country.

It looks innocent enough today: 526 acres of calm water surrounded by homes, campgrounds, and parks. But beneath the surface sits a 19th-century house that sank straight into the lake — piano and all.

The story dates back to 1895, when local grocer Thomas LeCount decided to move his home from one side of the lake to the other. Instead of hauling it across land like a sane person, LeCount figured he’d wait until winter and slide the house over the frozen water. For a while, it worked — until it didn’t. The house slipped sideways, got stuck in a snowbank, and the ice began to crack. LeCount gave up for the night, and by spring, the house had sunk.

For years, the second story poked above the surface like a ghostly lighthouse, and local kids skated through it during winter. One heavy item left inside was LeCount’s piano — and that’s where the haunting begins.

To this day, anglers and campers say they’ve heard faint piano music floating across Gardner Lake. Some blame shifting ice. Others swear it’s LeCount himself, still playing the last song of a house that couldn’t stay afloat.

Typical Connecticut, an entire lake haunted by Tommy from the grocery store.
