Two Danbury Officers Treated For Smoke At Town Hill Fire

According to a release from the City of Danbury, firefighters were called to a reported apartment fire Tuesday morning after smoke and flames were discovered at a home on Town Hill Avenue.

The call came in at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2nd for a structure fire at 34 Town Hill Ave. When crews arrived, they quickly determined that the fire was inside the kitchen of a third-floor apartment. Firefighters made their way to the third floor with handlines and were able to get the fire under control before it could spread further.

The incident did result in two Danbury police officers being taken to a local hospital after they were exposed to smoke. Thankfully, neither officer suffered serious injuries. Both were evaluated and treated for smoke inhalation and were later released from the hospital.

One of the residents was also checked out at the scene because of possible smoke inhalation. That person was evaluated by emergency personnel but ultimately declined to be transported to the hospital.

At this point, investigators are working to determine exactly what caused the fire and where it originated. The Danbury Fire Marshal’s Office is handling the investigation, and officials say additional information could be released as the investigation continues.

While nobody wants to think about having a fire in their home, the incident is also a good reminder about something that can be easy to overlook making sure your smoke alarms actually work.

Fire officials are encouraging residents to check their smoke alarms regularly and make sure they are operational. Having a plan for getting out of the house is just as important. Everyone in the home should know where they would go and what route they would take if a fire suddenly broke out.

A working smoke alarm can give you those critical extra seconds to get out, and having a practiced escape plan means you're not trying to figure it out while your house is filling with smoke.

The story of the Pardue brothers, their connection to Danbury and what happened in the Hat City in February of 1970 came to us from Mike Allen. John Pardue was a 27-year-old man in 1970 who lived in Danbury, his brother James was 23, and living in Lusby, MD. Before the story finds its way to the Hat City, and the brothers rob the Union Savings Bank on Main Street, they had already racked up quite the list of astonishing crimes.

Prior to Danbury, they robbed banks in Lewisboro, NY, Georgetown, CT and Union, MO. They also killed their father, their grandmother, two other men who helped them pull off the robbery in Georgetown, CT and had, at minimum, a role in the death of an innocent Bridgeport man that they stole a car from. John and James Pardue were hardened criminals before their Danbury bank robbery.
