Connecticut Had Two Capitals for Nearly 175 Years and Most People Never Learned Why

According to the Connecticut State Library, Connecticut didn't always have just one capital city. For nearly 175 years, Hartford and New Haven shared the title, a fascinating piece of Connecticut history that surprises even people who've lived here their entire lives.

The dual-capital system lasted from 1701 through 1874, before Hartford officially became the state's only capital in 1875. It's one of those facts that sounds completely made up, but it's absolutely true.

Back in the early 1700s, Connecticut was still a young colony, and both Hartford and New Haven were considered major centers of government and commerce. Rather than choosing one over the other, colonial leaders came up with a compromise. The General Assembly would alternate meeting between the two cities, giving each an equal role in governing the colony and, later, the state.

Believe it or not, that arrangement lasted an incredible 174 years.

Of course, moving the state's government back and forth wasn't exactly convenient. Lawmakers, official records, and other government business had to travel between Hartford and New Haven whenever the General Assembly met. As Connecticut's population continued to grow during the 1800s, many leaders felt it was finally time to settle on one permanent seat of government.

That happened in 1875, when Hartford officially became Connecticut's sole capital. A few years later, the magnificent Connecticut State Capitol building was completed, and it has remained the home of state government ever since.

I love uncovering little-known pieces of Connecticut history like this because they remind me there's still so much to learn about the place we call home. Ask just about anyone where Connecticut's capital is, and they'll quickly answer Hartford. Ask them if Connecticut once had two capital cities for nearly two centuries, and you'll probably get a puzzled look. It's one of those amazing stories that's been hiding in plain sight, and I can't believe they never taught us about it in school.
