New Milford Police Announce DUI Checkpoint on Danbury Road

According to a release from the New Milford Police Department, drivers traveling along Danbury Road should expect a DUI checkpoint on Friday, September 4, as officers work to keep impaired drivers off the road.

The checkpoint is scheduled to run from 7 p.m. Friday evening until 3 a.m. Saturday morning. It will be set up on Danbury Road somewhere between Larson Road and Candlewood Lake Road South.

Obviously, nobody loves seeing a police checkpoint when they're trying to get somewhere, but the goal here is pretty straightforward: identify impaired drivers before they have the opportunity to cause a serious crash. With the Labor Day weekend approaching, there will likely be plenty of people out celebrating, going to parties, visiting friends or heading out for a few drinks.

The New Milford Police Department is reminding everyone to have a plan before they start drinking. That could mean choosing a designated driver, calling a rideshare, taking a taxi or finding another safe way home.

Police are also making it clear that getting behind the wheel after drinking can result in much more than an inconvenient traffic stop. Drivers could be facing consequences involving their license, their finances and potentially their freedom. More importantly, an impaired driver can put completely innocent people in danger.

So, if you're heading out Friday night, plan your ride home before the first drink. It's a lot easier than trying to figure it out after the fact—and considerably better than becoming the reason everyone else on the road has a really bad night.
