Empty Shelves, Icy Walkways: Connecticut Deals With Salt Shortage
Another week, another product shortage in Connecticut. Have you been driving around striking out at Home Depot, Loews, and local hardware stores furiously searching for some precious rock salt to de-ice your driveway and walkway? It's not just us.
Have you noticed that as bad as the ice and snow has been these past few weeks in Connecticut that the majority of the big winter storms have been hitting the mid-Atlantic and Southern states this Winter? We're lucky that this one that was supposed to hit us tomorrow has gone on a more Southerly track, or the shortage we have right now would be even worse with more ice and snow on top.

Maybe that's a factor as to why the Northeast is dealing with a salt shortage? Rumors are flying on social media from local theorists who believe that our state made a quick buck by offloading some of it's excess salt supply to our neighbors. Others have floated the theory that suppliers held back deliveries as storms hit. One thing that the 2020's have shown us is that the American supply chain conveniently disappears the minute we really need something.
What I can tell you is this week's weather won't help your ice, it's so cold that we won't see any temps reach above 32 degrees until this weekend. I can also reiterate my article from earlier this week - With a Salt Shortage in Connecticut, Buy a Pair of These Instead.
Those are Stabilicers, I got them from LL Bean, and they cost $30. They're ice cleats you can pull over any shoe you own. Put a pair of these on the bottom of your shoes, and you can confidently walk across a sheet of ice.
