Connecticut Drivers Beware: E-ZPass Toll Violation Texts Are Fake!
According to nj.com, another sneaky scam targets E-ZPASS customers in Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. This is a text messaging scam attempting to persuade E-ZPass customers to enter personal and financial information on a bogus website.
If you receive a text from "NJ Turnpike Toll Services," DO NOT open the text. They are NOT associated with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority! These text messages claim drivers owe an outstanding toll balance and must click a link to avoid a late fee.
If you happen to click that link and fill out the form, immediately contact your bank or credit card provider. In April 2024, the FBI published a Public Service Announcement titled "Smishing Scam Regarding Debt for Road Toll Services," which you can access by clicking this link.
If you have a New York E-ZPpass transponder, IT MUST be in your vehicle on or near your windshield if you're cruising through New Jersey. This happened to me. We have a transponder, but it wasn't in the car for our four-hour Cape May, New Jersey trip.
Because I'm an idiot, we drove through the overhead toll cameras. When we received the bill in the mail, the toll was $2.31, but the administrative fee was $50 for each toll amount. We're disputing that bill. New Jersey can bite my ___________!! Except for Cape May!
