Yep, you read that right. Downtown Danbury.

At this point, bear sightings in Connecticut barely qualify as news anymore, but seeing one strolling through the middle of downtown is still enough to make you do a double take.

According to Yahoo, Connecticut's black bear population has exploded over the last several years and so have the encounters between bears and people. State wildlife officials estimate there are now between 1,000 and 1,200 black bears in Connecticut, and that number is expected to continue growing. In 2025 alone, more than 12,000 bear sightings were reported across the state, and bears were seen in all 169 Connecticut cities and towns. Human-bear conflicts have also climbed sharply, with home break-ins and other close encounters becoming much more common than they were just a decade ago.

Experts say if you come across a bear, the best thing you can do is stay calm, keep your distance, and never run. Instead, back away slowly while making yourself look bigger by raising your arms and speaking in a loud voice. They also recommend keeping dogs leashed, securing garbage, bringing in bird feeders, cleaning outdoor grills, and never leaving pet food outside because all of those things can attract bears into neighborhoods.

This latest sighting is just another reminder that bears are no longer just a Northwest Connecticut problem. They're showing up in suburbs, neighborhoods, parking lots, and now, apparently, downtown Danbury.

Connecticut keeps chattering about the possibility of a limited bear hunting season, and its probably time. Folks might wait too long, and someone is killed. With the number of bear sightings and human encounters continuing to rise, it's a conversation that isn't going away anytime soon.
