The Worst Bathrooms in the Nation? Connecticut Makes the List
According to research from Hello Millions, Connecticut Has a Bathroom Problem
According to research from Hello Millions (not Minions, calm down), America has a bathroom problem. A big one. Turns out, we’re short on public bathrooms, and depending on which state you’re in, finding a clean, accessible restroom could either be no big deal or an absolute nightmare.

The study ranked all 50 states on bathroom availability, cleanliness, and accessibility, and Minnesota came out on top. The Land of 10,000 Lakes is apparently also the land of decent rest stops, with about 43 bathrooms per 100,000 residents. Even better, more than one in three are wheelchair friendly. They weren’t spotless, but still above average — good enough for the win. Wyoming finished second, mostly because it’s got the most bathrooms per capita — nearly 60 for every 100,000 people.
Here are the Top 10 best states for public bathrooms:
Minnesota
Wyoming
Montana
Washington
Alaska
Colorado
Oregon
Wisconsin
Idaho
Hawaii

Now, let’s talk about the other end of the spectrum — the states where finding a decent public bathroom is basically a gamble. Here are the 10 worst states for public bathrooms:
Mississippi
Kentucky
Georgia
Louisiana
Connecticut
Arkansas
Alabama
Oklahoma
Rhode Island
Tennessee
A spokesperson for Hello Millions put it perfectly: "bathrooms are one of those things you don’t think about until you really, really need one."
I’m the type of person who will do just about anything to avoid using a public bathroom. That said, sometimes it’s unavoidable, and there’s nothing worse than that moment of truth. My experience with public restrooms in Connecticut is pretty black and white.
They’re either surprisingly decent—or an absolute disaster. There’s very little in between. I’ve seen bathrooms that make you seriously question whether life is worth it. It’s like some people are on a mission to crush souls and ruin days with the creative ways they “use” public facilities.
