Connecticut Has Some of the Worst Roads in America, New Report Shows
Connecticut Drivers Won’t Be Shocked by This Road Report
If you live in Connecticut, you don’t need a fancy map or a government study to tell you our roads are rough—you feel it every time you slam into a pothole the size of a backyard jacuzzi. But now we’ve got the receipts.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (via Mental Floss), Connecticut’s roads are among the worst in the nation. Only about 70% of our roadway miles were considered “acceptable” in 2023. Translation: 30% of the time, you’re playing bumper cars with craters and praying your suspension holds out.
Here are the Top 10 States with the Worst Roads:
1. Rhode Island
2. Hawaii
3. New Mexico
4. Connecticut
5. Mississippi
6. Washington
7. Maryland (Crab cakes & Football)
8. California
9. Pennsylvania
10. Oklahoma

Not exactly the trophy we were hoping for, but hey—at least it gives us something to talk about besides the endlessly serious pizza debates between four shops in the same New Haven neighborhood.
I’ll admit, I was shocked not to see Massachusetts make the cut. Their roads are objectively bonkers. Maybe Bay Staters have simply gone numb to potholes the size of Volkswagens.
If you’re driving through Mass anytime soon, you might want to get your suspension checked. And even if your mechanic says it’s fine, just replace the whole thing—you’re going to need all the help you can get. How about the best states for road conditions? They are in places we're not likely to be driving in anytime soon.
Here are the Top 10 States with the Best Roads:
1. Indiana
2. Kansas
3. South Dakota
4. Wyoming
5. Vermont
6. Tennessee
7. Idaho
8. Georgia
9. North Dakota
10. Nebraska
As I said, not much help to us.
