Danbury San Gennaro Festival Starts Today: Here’s What to Know

If you drove into downtown Danbury this morning, you probably noticed something was different. There are tents, trucks, lights and equipment everywhere around 1 Ives Street, and it is quite an overwhelming sight when you're coming into work first thing in the morning.

Honestly, it looks like if the Ewoks got together with the folks from Burning Man and somehow had a baby. There are lights everywhere, giant trucks rolling around and enough activity to make it very clear that something BIG is about to happen.

That something is the 5th annual Danbury San Gennaro Festival, which officially starts today and runs through Sunday. The free, five-day celebration brings Italian food, live music, games, entertainment and fireworks to downtown Danbury. Considering the festival takes over the area around our new digs at 1 Ives Street, the end of this week and the weekend should be a pretty fun time in the city.

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY

WHO: The Danbury community and anyone looking for some Italian food, music and entertainment.
WHAT: The 5th annual Danbury San Gennaro Festival.
WHEN: Wednesday, August 19 through Sunday, August 23.
WHERE: 1 Ives Street in downtown Danbury.
WHY: To celebrate Italian culture and bring the community together for five days of food, music, games and entertainment.

The festival kicks things off today with a 4 p.m. Mass and procession led by Bishop Frank Caggiano at St. Peter Church on Main Street. Vito Lombardo performs from 6-8 p.m.

Entertainment Schedule

Wednesday: Vito Lombardo, 6-8 p.m.
Thursday: Vito Lombardo, 5-7 p.m., followed by Beyond Purple.
Friday: The Zoo, with Vittorio Di Carlo performing from 5-7 p.m.
Saturday: Vittorio Di Carlo performs from 3-5 p.m., followed by Mullett. There will also be a fireworks show Saturday night.
Sunday: Vittorio Di Carlo returns from 5-7 p.m., with Shooting Star also scheduled.

There will be plenty of food, lights, music and activity throughout the weekend, so if you've been wondering what all those tents and trucks are doing downtown, now you know. The San Gennaro Festival is here, and Danbury is about to get very busy.
