Lake Bell has built one of the most versatile careers in Hollywood, moving effortlessly between acting, directing, and voice work. You’ve seen her in films like No Escape, Million Dollar Arm, It’s Complicated, and No Strings Attached, and you’ve heard her as Poison Ivy in DC’s Harley Quinn and as Black Widow in Marvel’s What If…?. She also made waves as a filmmaker with her acclaimed debut In a World…, which she wrote, directed, and starred in, earning recognition from Sundance to the Hollywood Critics Association. Bell brings that same sharp talent to HBO’s breakout comedy The Chair Company, where she stars as Barb Trosper.

Now, as The Chair Company heads toward its season finale on November 30, fans are gearing up for the climax of the wildly popular series—one that has become HBO’s biggest comedy debut in more than five years. The show follows Ron Trosper (Tim Robinson) as he stumbles into a sprawling conspiracy after a workplace mishap, blending mystery with Robinson’s trademark chaos. We recently caught up with Lake to talk about the project, her role, and the experience of working on such a runaway hit—and this moment from our conversation stood out above the rest.

Lou: I'm a huge fan of the show, but my challenge is explaining it. Like I said, I'm trying to tell friends about the show, explaining the humor, and I use words like odd, quirky, and funny. But also, I've read reviews that were positive, yet they described it as cringe humor, and I'm like, that has a negative connotation. I don't think that sums it up. Do you have the same challenge—explaining what the show is like?

Lake: "Yeah, it's sort of funny. I remember explaining it to my mom, who lives in Connecticut! Anyway, I would say to her, ‘So Mom, it's about a guy—a regular guy with a nice family and a good job—and he goes to work and has an embarrassing incident where he sits on a chair and it breaks underneath him, and he falls on his butt. And then he goes on a conspiracy to figure out if the chair company is out to get him.’ And she's like, ‘OK.’ But then I was like, ‘You have to understand who Tim is.’ And then I say to her, ‘You know, it's basically a subversive, offbeat, very unique take on what it is to feel a conspiracy brew inside you, and then you feel the need to think of yourself as a professional private investigator because you know how to use the internet.’ And I think that part of it feels very relatable. So it's equal parts relatable and total mania. And I think that, you know, when I explain it to people—cringe comedy—there is cringe, but the only way it can cringe is if it feels relatable. Because if everything feels otherworldly, it's just not going to work. So, I don't know. Look—we have a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, you know what I'm sayin'?"

I’ve been glued to this show since the very first episode, and I still can’t get enough. The whole comedic vibe is exactly my style — the casting is odd in the best way, the dialogue comes out of nowhere in the funniest possible fashion, and the entire thing is just a home run. Episode 5, “I won. Zoom In,” might be one of the most complete comedy episodes I’ve ever seen, and there’s one scene that has had me laughing for two weeks straight.

I tried finding a clip online so I could send it to friends, and when that failed, I did the only logical thing: I held my phone up to the TV and recorded it myself. I sent it out, but nobody could actually hear the dialogue because I was laughing too hard over it. I ended up asking my son to re-record it for me while I left the room so I didn’t ruin the audio again. That’s how good this show is — it turns full-grown adults into giggling disasters. It’s brilliant.
