Will Axe Throwing Become Connecticut’s Latest Craze?
If Merle McKenzie gets his wish, it just might be. McKenzie is planning to open CT's first recreational axe throwing facility this year in Newington.
According to an article in the Courant, axe throwing is already gaining in popularity across the country. It's exactly what it sounds like, throwing an axe at a bullseye-styled target. Think a giant game of darts, with a really heavy dart. When you first try it, you will most likely miss, but like everything else, practice makes perfect.
To the surprise of no one, the sport started in Canada as part of lumberjack competitions. McKenzie has been doing it for fun on his property, and told the Courant that when he heard about facilities popping up in other cities, he decided to give it a shot.
He even has a name picked out for his place, Montana Nights. He admits that the sport sounds dangerous, but says that all games will be played in the presence of an instructor. Much like a shooting range, each throwing area is individually enclosed.
If you're curious, here's a handy how-to guide on the finer points of axe throwing.
