Major Upgrades Coming To Waterbury Train Station In 2025
Long overdue news for Waterbury's New York City tourists and commuters has just been announced - Waterbury's train station is about to undergo a $35 million dollar renovation.

Have you ever used the Waterbury train station? I lived there for most of my life and only used our station once. All of my other train trips into New York started in Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stamford, Westport, or Southeast. Why? Honestly, a variety of reasons, but the biggest factors were the transfer in Bridgeport, safety, and parking. In 2026 that may change.
Governor Ned Lamont and Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski have just finished up a news conference where they've announced that construction has started on a $35.2 million dollar project on a major redevelopment of Waterbury's train station. The bigger picture is that this is the first step of modernizing all six Metro North stations (Naugatuck, Beacon Falls, Seymour, Ansonia, and Derby/Shelton) located in the Naugatuck Valley.
What's Going to Change Over the Next Year?
A more accessible and rider-focused infrastructure, which means: a brand-new high-level platform, ticket vending machines, bathrooms, real-time arrival video displays, improved security, more parking, and finally a new 1,600 indoor waiting area inside Union Station.
The timeline released by Governor Lamont calls for the return of the scourge of Waterbury to Bridgeport train riders- Bus trips - to minimize disruptions during the project during Summer 2026, but work will begin on the indoor waiting area in November 2025, followed by the platform work in early 2026. The new waiting area has a projected opening date of Fall 2026.
