A recent study highlights that the American Dream is thriving in Putnam, particularly the aspect related to safety. According to U.S. News & World Report, Putnam County ranks as the 8th safest county in America, with an impressive overall safety score of 89 out of 100. Our neighboring Westchester County performed even better, securing the 6th spot with a score of 91 out of 100.

Other key findings include:

  • Nassau County, NY, was identified as the safest region in America.
  • New York State had 8 of the top 25 safest counties in the Northeast.
  • This safety data is part of a broader study aiming to identify the "Healthiest Communities in America," with Falls Church City, Virginia, being named the healthiest community by U.S. News & World Report.

To determine these rankings, U.S. News & World Report analyzed 92 health-related metrics across 3,000 American counties, examining factors such as:

  • Population Health
  • Education
  • Public Safety
  • Food & Nutrition
  • Infrastructure

From an external perspective, Putnam County might seem like an idyllic American suburb and that is because it is. Having experienced it from within, I can attest that it truly is a wonderful place to live and raise children. While it may have seemed dull in our youth, I now appreciate how fortunate I was to be raised in a place largely insulated from the world's harshest problems. Although Putnam County may be perceived as boring, I would choose that over a place marked by danger and fear any day.

I texted Putnam County Sheriff Kevin McConville and congratulated him on the ranking and asked him if he'd share his thoughts, this is what he had to say:

"We are very pleased to be ranked as the 8th safest county in the United States. Our goal is to be number 1! This achievement is the result of the hard work of our deputies, investigators, and corrections officers. Every member of the PCSO is well trained and aware of their role in keeping our residents and community safe. I congratulate them for their efforts and this recognition."

P.S. If your town is missing from the Putnam County towns list above it's because your town is NOT a town, it's a hamlet. Places like Mahopac and Putnam Lake are part of Putnam County but they are hamlets.
