According to a study from Kitchn, Connecticut has a clear favorite when it comes to soda, and it isn't Coke, Pepsi, or even Dr. Pepper. Based on Instacart shopping data breaking down the most popular sodas in every state, Connecticut falls into the Canada Dry Ginger Ale camp.

That might be a little surprising. When you think of the soda aisle, ginger ale probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind as a statewide favorite. But Connecticut is apparently helping prove that ginger ale is much more popular than we give it credit for.

The map shows Canada Dry dominating a surprising portion of the Northeast. Connecticut joins several other states in the region where shoppers are reaching for ginger ale more than the major cola brands. New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maine are also among the states where Canada Dry comes out on top.

And while Dr. Pepper dominates much of the country, Connecticut isn't following that trend either. Dr. Pepper is the most popular soda in 17 states, particularly across the South and West. Mountain Dew also has its territory, especially in parts of Appalachia and the Midwest.

The traditional Coca-Cola brand, meanwhile, only takes the top spot in three states: Florida, Georgia and Louisiana. Diet Coke actually performs better, coming in first in Massachusetts, Illinois, Utah and Washington. Pepsi has an even smaller footprint, ranking first in just Delaware, while Diet Pepsi takes Iowa and Oregon.

The Northeast has some interesting soda loyalties of its own. New York apparently prefers Schweppes Ginger Ale, while Michigan has gone with Vernors.

So, Connecticut, apparently we're a ginger ale state. If you have a six-pack of Canada Dry sitting in your refrigerator right now, you may be more Connecticut than you realized.
