90% of the time, when I drive on I-84, where the speed limit is 65mph, I do my best to maintain a maximum speed of 72mph. I didn't realize this four-lane highway evolved into Connecticut's latest racetrack. I've witnessed vehicles driving between 80 and 90mph while weaving in and out of the traffic flow.

The result is that Connecticut has recorded an average of more than one traffic fatality per day for the first time in 2022, according to ctmirror.org, which reported 368 people died in car crashes in 2022. Connecticut has suffered 2,500 deaths since 2015. Many of these were caused by DUIs, wrong-way accidents, or distractions, among other factors.

Instead of increasing the speed limit on some of Connecticut's four-lane highways, the Department of Transportation should lower the speed limit on I-84, I-95, I-91, and I-691 from 65 mph to 55 mph, knowing full well that there's not a chance in hell that will ever happen, nor would anyone abide by the speed limit. Maybe, just maybe, this YouTube video is a lesson on why speed can kill.
