This is the Last Week of Post-8PM Sunsets in Connecticut
Today is August 6, and it's supposed to get up into the 80's in Connecticut today, but you better start savoring those warm Summer nights, the days are already getting shorter.
Tonight's sunset in Western Connecticut will happen at exactly 8:06:31PM, and by the time the earth has made a full rotation 24 hours from now we will lose just under 2 minutes of sunshine. By the end of this week we will see the last post-8PM sunset of 2025 in Connecticut.
I noticed the lack of sunlight on my way into work this morning in Brookfield, over the past three days Connecticut has been blanketed with smoke from distant wildfires burning away up in the Great White North. The haze you see in the air at 10AM in broad daylight mutes the sunrise too. Ever since the Summer solstice of June 20, 2025, which is longest day of the year, we've been losing an average of 2 minutes of daylight per day. This will continue up until the Winter solstice (Shortest day of the year) on December 21, 2025.
How long was the longest, and how short will the shortest day be in Connecticut in 2025?
On June 20, 2025 Connecticut saw 15 hours and 14 minutes of daylight. We will only get 9 hours and 13 minutes of sun by December 21.
This is my favorite time of year because I try to go to sleep by 8PM on weekdays, and it is so tough for my naturally nocturnal instincts to turn off while the sun is still shining onto my bed. Getting up at 3AM is tough no matter when I fall asleep, but even more so during June and July.
