One of the most talked-about roads is Roast Meat Hill Road in Killingworth. Sounds less like a location and more like a medieval dinner menu. The name alone sparks questions, and while the exact origin isn’t clear, historians point to early settlers who may have used the area for community cookouts—or perhaps for livestock herding. Either way, it’s a name that sticks with you.

Only in Connecticut: The Road Names That Make GPS Sound Drunk

Head over to East Haddam and you’ll find Witch Meadow Road. If that doesn’t scream “turn around before the sun sets,” I don’t know what does. This one is believed to be connected to the region’s early colonial past, when superstitions about witches were common. Today, it’s simply an eye-catching name that locals love to share with visitors.

Frog Hollow Road appears in several towns, including Hartford, where the Frog Hollow neighborhood is one of the city’s oldest. Once home to wetlands teeming with croaking frogs, the name stuck.

Then there’s Swamp Yankee Road in North Stonington. “Swamp Yankee” is a term dating back to colonial times. It sounds like a rejected minor league baseball team. Still, it’s actually a nod to colonial settlers who lived in the rural swamps, referring to rural New Englanders of modest means.
