Not So Fast Connecticut, Your May Day ’25 Party Might Get Frosty
Just when you thought it was safe to put away that heavy jacket and leave the tomato plants outside, the winter of 2024/25 might be sending another shocking surprise our way tonight.
Mark Twain is often credited with coming up with the saying 'If you don't like the weather in New England, wait five minutes. Today is another perfect example. The National Weather Service has just issued a Frost Advisory for Litchfield County from midnight tonight until 8AM Thursday (May 1).
When I woke up and left for work this morning, my car was covered in yellow pollen from the trees that are exploding all around us, and it was 59 degrees in Torrington. Connecticut is also under an elevated fire risk advisory today until 6PM due to 20-30MPH winds and low humidity.
What's in the Forecast for Tonight? What Should You Bring Inside?
Temperatures are forecast to dip as low as 31 degrees overnight tonight in Litchfield County, frost is deadly or can harm tender or sensitive outdoor vegetation. Although the outdoor growing season is just getting started, your tomato, cucumber, eggplant, peppers, squash, and watermelon may be in trouble tonight.
My grandmother used to cut the bottom off of plastic jugs and place them over the babies in her garden. If her garden was a bit more packed or she ran out of jugs, she used to completely cover the garden with sheets of plastic over and around the chicken wire enclosure. It's May Day tomorrow, hopefully this will be the last we see of anything below 32 until November.
