New Milford Paints a Permanent Rainbow Crosswalk to Honor Pride Month
I love New Milford! Mayor Pete Bass and his team have done it again.
After a year, New Milford's rainbow crosswalk lost its luster as it began to fade away, initially spearheaded by New Milford business owner Elora Herberick.
In an article published by News Times, it was reported that on Thursday night, a group of volunteers from the LGBTQ+ community volunteered their time and effort to paint the rainbow once again. The project was approved by Mayor Pete Bass, however, this rainbow will be permanently installed.
Herberick saw a rainbow crosswalk in Great Barrington, Mass. and brought the idea to the Mayor, which he embraced and Village Center for the Arts kicked in the materials to paint the crosswalk.
On June 12, New Milford debuted their first pride event thanks to a new resident, Lauren Burke, who moved to Gaylordsville last year and spearheaded the project for a Pride Picnic on the green where 125 people attended. The Mayor even hung a pride flag outside of Town Hall.
Burke has worked for various social justice initiatives and understands the mental health impacts the pandemic has had on LGBTQ+ individuals. Hence, she teamed up with Adam Murphy and Dez Noa Volnixshin to help provide a safe space to gather. The three of them have formed a new group called Southern Litchfield Pride.
