CT Towns So Obscure, Most People Don’t Know They Exist
I've worked in Brookfield, Connecticut for nearly 20 years. Over the last 15, I've lived in a few different parts of the state—two stints in New Milford and a long stretch in Danbury. I've also traveled all over Connecticut for live I-95 events, hitting pockets across the state. Still, I didn’t grow up here—I'm originally from New York.

That said, I've basically taken a crash course in all things Connecticut out of necessity. I’ve gotten to know the towns, the roads, the lakes, the wildlife, the politicians, the local nicknames, and even the state's quirky adopted identities.
And yet, despite all that time and experience, there are still hidden bits of info buried in small, rural towns around the state. You really can learn something new about the Constitution State every day (said the aging man).
Just recently, I stumbled across a Reddit thread on the Connecticut page that caught my eye. The post, by u/ILovePublicLibraries, asked:
What is one Connecticut town that almost nobody has heard of before?
They added:
“I think no one seems to be talking about Colebrook, a somewhat 'forgotten' town in Litchfield County, tucked between the Massachusetts border and highway access, without much recognizable to outsiders.”
Here were some of the best responses:
omeedohmy: I live in Bozrah. I once told a date where I lived, and she responded with when you come back to the U.S. I'd love to spend some time with you.. this woman thought I was living in Bosnia.
ApulMadeekAut: Killingworth as well! another "where?" town.
Mobile-Animal-649: Yantic as well. lol Brick and Basil!
Elm-City-Oso: I'm not native to CT but have lived here for 10 years now. I was so confused when my now wife told me her parents lived in Lebanon. I was like damn that must make for some interesting holiday travel...and she was like uh yeah, it's about an hour or so. Still befuddles me.
G3Saint: Scotland, home of the antique tool museum featuring 1,200 woodworking planes.
mcauliffetj: You could 100% make up a town name and i think most of us would believe it existed. but for me it is Elmstone.
duh-guv-nuh: This. I’m from Coddlebrook and people act like it doesn’t exist.
ValuableAd551: Brooklyn. I am not a New Yorker; I am from The Quiet Corner.
kweee: "I live in Columbia." "Oh, where's that?" "You have lived in Colchester your whole life. It is two miles away."
house_plant77: Lol I moved here to Columbia 3 years ago. Telling people, I'm moving to Columbia was funny because it sounded like I was saying I'm moving to Colombia, the country.
eatsleep19: Gaylordsville.
Apprehensive-Risk649: North Grosvenordale.
amberdrogonfly5: Willington. I usually have to tell people I grew up out near UConn...that seems to help. My husband still gets it mixed up with Willimantic.
TopicLongjumping918: I live in Harwinton and anytime I tell people that, absolutely no one knows where it is.
Beetlejuice1800: There used to be a town called Fluteville near Harwinton’s southern border. Nobody remembers it anymore because it was swept away in the 1955 flood. Some structural remains are still around close to the Thomaston Dam.
argxlvwj222: Attawagaun, Ballouville, Wauregan, Sterling, Oneco, Central Village, Moosup, Wilsonville.
Lyrehctoo: I grew up in Rockfall. No, not Rockville. RockFALL. It's near Middletown. Yes, it's part of Middlefield, but it has its own zip code, so it's its own town, damnit.
mikepol70: Thompson has nothing other than the speedway.
ziukkinna: I don’t think it’s technically a town, but did anyone else ever visit Dudleytown before they banned all visitors?
Bozrah made me laugh—that’s the go-to town we always reference on the I-95 Morning Show whenever we’re trying to paint a picture of “middle-of-nowhere” Connecticut.
I also got a good chuckle out of Brooklyn being mentioned. About six years ago, my wife took me there to meet a friend at a party. She never once said “Brooklyn, Connecticut”—just kept saying Brooklyn. So naturally, when we got in the car, I headed for the borough in New York. It took her way too long to realize the mistake. Once we finally got on the same page, we rerouted to what I now lovingly call: Holy F---- S---, Connecticut.
