5 Myths About the State of Connecticut
Connecticut is one of those states that everyone thinks they’ve figured out, but the reality is a little messier. Outsiders tend to reduce the Nutmeg State to a couple of tired stereotypes—rich people, Yale nerds, and Mystic pizza—but if you actually live here, you know it’s a lot more complicated than that.

Like most places, Connecticut has its quirks, its flaws, and its bragging rights. We’ve got history, charm, and yes, world-class pizza. But we’re also misunderstood, and sometimes even lumped into categories that don’t fit. That’s where the myths come in and it’s time to set a few of them straight.

What really gets me about these Connecticut myths is that most of them aren’t even pushed by outsiders—they’re created right here at home. I’ve spent more than a decade digging into the stories, history, and oddities of this state, and that pattern is one of the biggest takeaways: the same drumbeat, over and over. New Haven pizza. Mystic. Yale. Huskies basketball. Rinse and repeat. But in the process, so many hidden gems get overlooked—especially here in western Connecticut, where I live, and where there’s no shortage of culture, charm, and character worth shouting about.
That’s fine, though. I’ll keep banging my own drum. Because the people, places, and things this state has to offer? They’ll knock your socks off. And once that happens, trust me—you won’t be needing socks anymore.
