Connecticut Leads Nation in Rising Unemployment Claims

According to a new report from Wallet Hub, unemployment is a bit of a roller coaster right now. Over the past year, claims have bounced around and ticked up overall, and for the week of August 25 they climbed 3.5% nationwide week-over-week.

In total, about 7.2 million Americans are unemployed. WalletHub looked at changes in unemployment claims across several benchmark weeks, plus claims per 100,000 people in the labor force, to find where claims are rising the most. Week-over-week increases showed up in a wide chunk of the map. From the East Coast to the deep south to the mountains of the Northwest, people are struggling. At the same time, 29 states—including Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and North Dakota—were actually better than the same week a year ago.

Here’s WalletHub’s list of the States with the Biggest Increases in Unemployment Claims:

1. Connecticut
2. Tennessee
3. District of Columbia
4. Nebraska
5. Illinois
6. Oregon
7. Virginia
8. Mississippi
9. New York
10. California

Well, how lucky are we? Nothing says good vibes like unemployment spiking in the state you live in, and the one you grew up in.

You can almost feel it, right? Even if I didn’t put this report in front of you, it’s in the air. And if you can’t feel it, just look around—your neighbors are changing right before your eyes. Last Thursday, they might’ve been polished up for work, hair perfectly in place, walking with purpose like their opinion mattered and their bills were getting paid.

Fast forward a week and suddenly they’re in Crocs and gray sweatpants with questionable stains, yelling at the neighbor’s kids—or maybe the dog—for no real reason. The same person is now burning through scratch-off tickets and quoting Matthew McConaughey YouTube rants like scripture.

Personal problems are easy to spot from a hundred yards away. You can always tell when someone’s riding the struggle bus, but you can’t always nail down the exact issue—unless they’ve lost their job. That one’s obvious. It hits like a Mike Tyson face tattoo. You can see it in their eyes, their clothes, even catch a whiff of it on their breath.

And no, it’s not funny—it’s heartbreaking. But me? I’m choosing to laugh through it like the Joker, because I’ve been warning anyone who’d listen: the tidal wave is coming. Big AI, Amazon, Facebook, TikTok—they’re not just competing, they’re swallowing everything. None of us are immune. We’re all about to get swept away on the rising tide of “convenience.”

Hope you’ve got a life raft. I know I don’t.

Under the Bridge – Danbury’s Hidden Art Project

Danbury, CT has a lot of murals which have been sanctioned by the city and then there is the illegal graffiti. The Hat City has its fair share of illegal graffiti but most of it, is off the beaten-path. It’s near the train tracks, and under bridges, it’s in places most residents will never go. I intentionally seek these places out. I like to go to places most people would find scary, grimy or even dangerous. I’m willing to climb over downed trees, step on broken glass and dodge rusting metal to find my way to a place I was never meant to see.
