Kevin Brown/Derek Lowe Was the Pitching Match up The Last Time These Two Met in Playoffs
October 20th, 2004 was the last time the Yankees and Red Sox faced one another in post season play. This was Game 7 of the ALCS and it did not turn out well for us Yankee fans.
Kevin Brown took the mound at Yankee Stadium for the Bombers and Boston sent Derek Lowe to the hill. The Yankees lost 2-0 and the Red Sox would go on to beat the Cardinals in the Fall Classic for their first World Series title since 1918.
The ALCS was and historic event that year. The Red Sox trailed the series 3-0 and became the first team in MLB history to overcome that deficit and defeat the Yankees. It was the worst loss I've ever experienced as a sports fan.
We are now a decade plus removed from that event and tonight is the beginning of the new rivalry as we know it.This game will be filled with players who were little kids the last time these two teams faced off in the playoffs. For instance, Gleyber Torres was 7 years old on that October night.
Tonight these kids, these "Baby Bombers" can take revenge on behalf of their pinstripe alumni. Aaron Judge and company can go out there and start to take it back for guys like Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera.
Time rolls on, the names change, the game evolves but one thing remains the same....this is the best rivalry in all of sports. I'll be watching, eyes peeled on the edge of my seat, yelling at the TV.
