According to a recent study from Wallet Hub ranking the happiest states in America, Connecticut is doing pretty well in the happiness department. In fact, the Nutmeg State came in at No. 7 overall, while New York landed at No. 11.

The study looked at all 50 states using 30 different measurements tied to things like emotional and physical well-being, work environment, community, safety, sleep, exercise, income growth, unemployment and even how much people volunteer. So apparently, happiness is no longer something you just have to feel — somebody has figured out how to turn it into a spreadsheet.

Connecticut scored particularly well when it came to emotional and physical well-being, ranking fifth in that category. The state also came in ninth for community and environment. Where Connecticut really took a hit was the workplace, where it ranked 27th.

New York had an interesting split. The Empire State ranked third in emotional and physical well-being, which is impressive, but came in 34th for work environment and 39th for community and environment. So New Yorkers may be feeling pretty good, but apparently they're doing it while complaining about their jobs and sitting in traffic.

Connecticut also ranked extremely well for safety, coming in second nationally behind Vermont. Massachusetts was third, New Hampshire fourth and Maine fifth, meaning New England basically decided it wanted to dominate the safety portion of the happiness competition.

At the very top of the list was Hawaii, followed by New Jersey, Utah, Idaho and Maryland. Hawaii scored especially well for life satisfaction, physical health and economic conditions.

At the bottom was West Virginia, with Louisiana, Alaska, Arkansas and Kentucky rounding out the bottom five.

So there you have it. Connecticut is officially one of America's happiest states. And if you've ever paid a Connecticut electric bill, property tax bill or sat on I-84 during rush hour, you may have a few questions for the researchers.
