John McCain’s Childhood in Connecticut Remembered
As the nation mourns the passing of the Senator from Arizona, John McCain, a handful of Connecticut residents remember the politician's family from their days spent in the state many years ago.
1440 Ocean Avenue in New London, CT was a childhood home of the late Senator, while his father served proudly at the naval submarine base in Groton. Harbor Elementary School was where John attended kindergarden and first grade, according to WTNH TV News. New London was Mr. McCain's home town until the age of around nine years old.
It was at that Ocean Avenue home that, as a child, he was told that his father would have to ship out to fight in the second world war. This news came to the family as the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the war had just broken out. Those days near the navy base helped instill a desire in him to join the Navy himself, and become a fighter pilot. As the world says goodbye to Senator McCain, Connecticut can proudly claim a small piece of his legacy.
