Driving Through Bunker Hill in Waterbury Just Got a Little Safer
Hey nervous drivers of Waterbury, you might have a little less anxiety driving through Bunker Hill from now on, and it's due to a partnership between the City of Waterbury and the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
The intersection of Bunker Hill Avenue, Grandview Avenue, and Woodruff Street has been the scene of dozens of accidents over the course of my lifetime, and those are just the ones that I've been around to see. Woodruff Street is a steep hill and there has never been a stop sign at the top when you approach Dunker Hill Avenue, until now. Mayor Paul Pernerewski has just announced through the City of Waterbury-Mayor's Office social media page that a spiffy new stop sign has been installed at the top of the hill of Woodruff Street at the intersection of Bunker Hill Ave. Now you will have to stop and take in the majesty that is Rocky's Pizza before turning right or left.
According to Mayor Pernerewski, the new stop sign has been installed at the intersection to enhance safety for both pedestrians and vehicles. I can tell you for the past 40 years that the traffic flying up Woodruff Street hits 40-50 mph by the time vehicles approach that intersection, and most of the cars pulling out from Bunker Hill Avenue by Rocky's Pizza is blind to 3/4 of the length of Woodruff Street. It was a bit easier to see if you were pulling into the intersection from the park and library area, but this should still be a major improvement.
I remember going into Funstuff to rent videos from Carmine, and it was always an adventure getting into your vehicle if you were parked on the street in front of the store.
