Do You Agree That This Connecticut Town Was Named Most Difficult to Pronounce?
Some towns have names that are so hard to pronounce. You try to read them and think, "what the heck does that even say?" I tried to think if Connecticut had any really hard ones. There may be some, I feel like there are some smaller towns in Connecticut that we haven't even heard of.
Readers Digest came up with a list of The Most Difficult-to-Pronounce Towns in Every State and I was interested to see what Connecticut's would be. The first ones that caught my eye as I scrolled the list was Loachapoka in Alabama, Nunathloogagamiutbingoi Dunes in Alaska (...what?) and Ouachita in Arkansas. Those I agree with. I can look at them and go huh??
As I kept scrolling, I landed on Connecticut's. The town that was named hardest to pronounce was Berlin. Interesting. Is that a hard town name to pronounce to others? Maybe? When I see Berlin, to me, it looks exactly as it sounds.
The description was as follows: "If you’re thinking it’s pronounced like the city in Germany, you’re wrong. It’s actually BURR-lin, emphasis on the BURR. Located at the geographic center of the state, the land was originally known as Pagonchawnischage (a Mattabassat Indian name), so really, things could be a lot worse."
That is news to me. I didn't know the land was originally known as Pagonchawnischage. That though, is something I have no idea how to pronounce.
I'm not sure I agree with Berlin, though. What do you think? What are some towns in Connecticut that you think are pretty tricky to pronounce?
