Danbury Officials Issue Statement Denouncing Tyre Nichols Killing: ‘The Video is Appalling’

On January 7th, 29-year-old Tyre Nichols was brutally attacked by five Memphis, Tennessee police officers. According to the AP, Nichols died three days later from injuries sustained during that attack.

The entire incident was captured on police body cameras and the images are tough to watch. Nichols' death has caused a wave of outrage across the country and agitated an already sore subject in America. The relationship between the police and minority communities is in a very raw place in our country.

On Saturday, January 28th, 2023, the Danbury Officials issued a statement denouncing the actions of those Memphis police officers. The press release was made available by City Hall but was co-signed by Danbury Mayor Dean Esposito and DPD Chief Patrick Ridenhour. The statement reads:

"Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of Mr. Tyre Nichols, who lost his life because officers in Memphis violated their oath of office and the laws that they swore to uphold. The video is appalling. Appropriately, these officers have already been terminated, arrested, and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There is no rightful place in this profession for brutality under any circumstances. The outrage that this senseless assault has caused is felt by all, including the dedicated men and women of the Danbury Police Department and every other good police officer who believes that this job can and should be done with compassion and by respecting the life and dignity of everyone we encounter. The Danbury Police Department greatly appreciates the support we have from our local community over the years and promises that we will never take that support for granted. Through education, training, outreach and, most importantly, proper supervision we will continue to do everything possible to ensure accountability and to build and maintain positive relationships and trust with our entire community.”
