Danbury is one of those Connecticut cities that people think they know pretty well… until they start digging into the history a little bit. On the surface, it’s a busy city in Fairfield County with a huge mall, a well-known federal prison, and one of the busiest stretches of I-84 in the state. But once you start looking into the past, you realize Danbury has a pretty wild story that includes Revolutionary War destruction, strange industrial hazards, and one industry that literally put the city on the global map.

In fact, Danbury’s influence once reached far beyond Connecticut. During the height of its hat-making boom in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the city earned the nickname “Hat City” because it was producing millions of hats every year. The industry was so big that it shaped the local economy, the culture, and even some phrases we still hear today. Add in historic disasters, one of the largest fairs in New England history, and a few famous residents along the way, and you start to realize Danbury has way more stories than people might expect.

Danbury is also home to the Federal Correctional Institution Danbury, which has housed several high-profile inmates over the years and even served as inspiration for parts of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.

Another interesting piece of trivia: Danbury Municipal Airport once played an important role in regional aviation and still serves private and business aircraft today.

The day I took this round of pictures (September 15 or 16th I can't remember), the light all over the city was just perfect. The sun was dancing in all the right places on the buildings, the trees and the grass. I said to hell with it, I'm publishing these photos. But what should I write in the description? I decided to pair the images with odd Danbury facts I gathered from prior articles.
