Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has announced that the 2025 Connecticut Sales Tax Free has been set for Sunday, August 17 through Saturday, August 23. During these seven days the State of Connecticut will allow the sale or purchase of certain items of clothing costing less than $100 to be exempt from sales tax. This sales tax exemption applies to online retailers and gool ol' brick & mortar retailers actually located in Connecticut.

What Types of Clothing and Footwear are Eligible?

Just about any article of clothing or footwear under $100 will be tax free. This includes: Shirts, Socks, Pants, Hats, Gloves, Shoes, Robes, Scarves, Kitchen Aprons, Belts, Jackets, Ties, Lingerie, Diapers, and yes - Earmuffs.

What Types of Clothing and Footwear are Taxable?

Lobster Bibs, Ice and Roller Skates, Protective Aprons, Wallets, Wet Suits, Handbags and Purses, and 'specialty' boots and shoes. I'll explain.

Under Connecticut law -  'Any special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use that is not normally worn except when used for the athletic activity or protective use for which it is designed' and jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches, and similar items carried on or about the human body but not worn on the body in the matter characteristic of clothing do not qualify for exemption.

Also there is no limit on the number of qualifying items that you could purchase at one time. If you purchase several qualifying items under $100 each, the retailer should not charge sales tax on any of the items.
