‘Crazy Joe Devola’ Home Security is Not for Connecticut Residents
The best part of any documentary is always that one nearly dead man in suspenders, reminiscing about his neighborhood. Without fail, he’ll say something like, “It was the kind of place where you didn’t need to lock your doors at night.” Cut to a dramatic montage of local news clips featuring the most horrific short story you've ever heard.

In 2025, and you’d assume locking your doors would be a non-negotiable for literally everyone in the U.S. But apparently... not so much. Vivint Smart Home just dropped a new study showing which states are actually keeping their doors locked.
Connecticut? We’re not messing around. According to the data, we're near the top of the list, with 90% of residents saying they lock up. Take that, would-be-criminals!
The Top 5 States Where People "Always" Lock Their Doors:
1. Georgia - 93%
2. Connecticut - 90%
3. Michigan - 88% - TIE
3. Indiana - 88% - TIE
3. Rhode Island - 88% - TIE
Looks like North Dakota is comfortable living on the edge—only 48% of residents there say they always lock their doors.
Personally, I take the “Crazy Joe Devola” approach to home security. Not only do I leave the door unlocked, I like to leave it wide open—just to encourage intruders. After all, fear is our most primal emotion.
Additional Takeaways from Vivint Smart Home Study:
- 77% of Americans don’t lock their doors when they’re home, and 75% don’t lock up for quick errands—surprisingly casual security habits for 2025.
- Only 33% of Americans are very concerned about someone breaking into their home, even though crime concerns are often top of mind in public conversations.
- 80% of respondents said home privacy is very important to them—they don’t like strangers near their personal space or belongings.
- 61% of people lock their doors right before going to bed, showing that nighttime still triggers the strongest sense of needing protection.
- Among parents, 25% say their concern for home security increased after having a child, though 57% say they’ve always been diligent about securing their home regardless.
