Hartford Tops the List for Least Affordable Cities in America
According to MSN/Love Money, two Connecticut cities just landed on the list of the least affordable places to live in America—and not in a “hey, we made it” kind of way. This is the bad kind of list.

The ranking comes from U.S. News & World Report, which put together a “Value Index” for 2024–2025. They basically looked at what it costs to live in each city—mortgage payments, rent, utilities, taxes, groceries, transportation—and then stacked that up against how much money the average household actually brings in.
If your paycheck doesn’t come close to covering your daily life, the score tanks.
Here’s the ugly truth for us folks here in the Nutmeg State:
New Haven (No. 4 on the list) might have Yale, museums, coffee shops, and a cultural calendar packed with stuff to do, but the math doesn’t add up for regular folks. Housing prices are close to the national median, but wages are low, and everyday costs like food and utilities are higher than average. It ended up with a Value Index score of just 3.7 out of 10.
Hartford (No. 1 on the list) took the crown as the least affordable city in the country. And the problem is pretty simple: income. The typical household pulls in about $46,377 a year—around 42% less than the national average. Mix that with higher-than-average costs for basics like groceries and transportation, and Hartford finished dead last with a Value Index of 3.3 out of 10.
So yeah, we all complain about how expensive it is to live here, but now we’ve got the official receipts to back it up.

This isn’t some random TikTok take—it’s U.S. News & World Report saying, after weighing everything, that Hartford and New Haven rank among the most expensive places to live in the entire country. Let that sink in. At least in New York City, you get, well, New York City. But in New Haven? You’re paying top dollar and still stuck living in New Haven. Ugh.
What a ray of sunshine I am today.
