Consumer Alert Issued Regarding Unlicensed Contractors in CT
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection has just released a consumer alert warning the public that it's critical to always check the credentials of any contractor that you've considered before hiring.
As tempting as it may be to save yourself a few bucks by employing a crew you found hanging around outside your local Home Depot to do some work on your home, don't do it. According to Connecticut DCP Commissioner Brian Cafferelli:
'A contractor may seem trustworthy, and even present you with a credential, but it is important to verify that license is legitimate, matches their identity, and is sufficient for the work to be completed. It is illegal to buy or sell a credential, and to complete any work outside of the scope of a license. Hiring an unqualified contractor poses a serious safety risk to consumers and community.'
Recently, Connecticut DCP's Occupational Trades Enforcement Unit's Electrical Work Board formally revoked the license of Arnold Goldberg of Woodbridge for reportedly allowing unqualified individuals to do work under his credentials. Goldberg's credentials were revoked on November 8, 2024, and the Electrical Work Board imposed a $6,000 civil penalty. All open permits that were issued to Goldberg are void, and require submission of a new permit application by a properly licensed contractor.
Be prepared, always check Connecticut's eLicense portal and check the status of any credential that has been issued by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. Building officials or consumers that may need additional guidance should send an email to dcp.occupationalenforcement@ct.gov.
