How Dangerous Is Connecticut During the Holidays? New Data Isn’t Comforting

According to Mental Floss, a new study looked at which states are the most dangerous to be in during the holidays, using ten different metrics like structure fires, winter road conditions, crime rates, drunk driving, and overall injury numbers. Basically, they wanted to know where Christmas quietly turns into a high-risk activity.

At the top of the danger list is Vermont, which feels right. Mental Floss says the chances of a white Christmas there are basically 100%, and the driving conditions turn the whole state into a snow globe you can die in. Wisconsin lands in the number two spot thanks to sky-high drinking rates, and Oregon slides in at number three because of all the serious crashes they rack up.

But here’s the part I didn’t love reading: Connecticut cracked the top 10, coming in at number nine. And our biggest issue? Car crashes. Not fires, not crime, not injuries from overcooking the ham — just plain old Connecticut driving. The study didn’t need to tell me that, though. Anyone who’s spent more than ten minutes on I-84 already knows the deal. It’s always some combination of tailgating, sudden braking, and the classic “I’m going 45 in the left lane, and I don’t care what you think.”

Meanwhile, the safest holiday states are supposedly Mississippi, Utah, Texas, and Virginia. Hey, good for them. This is all very informative and well-researched, but let’s be honest: 90% of people aren’t going to change anything about how they drive this time of year. So yeah — Connecticut being one of the most dangerous Christmas states? Sounds about right.

Let's make a movie! Even better, let's make a Christmas movie in our area. I've always thought the Greater-Danbury towns would make great settings for holiday films.
