New York Named Best State for Teen Drivers, CT Lands in Top 5

According to a new study from Wallet Hub, New York is officially the best state in America for teen drivers, while Connecticut also landed inside the Top 5. So, if you have a teenager who is about to get behind the wheel, apparently the Northeast isn't such a bad place to be.

WalletHub compared all 50 states using 23 different measurements, looking at everything from teen crash fatalities and DUI arrests to driving laws, insurance costs, road conditions and even the price of getting a car repaired.

New York came in at number one overall, and there's a pretty good reason for it. The state has one of the lowest rates of teen driver fatalities in the country, ranking fourth-best in that category. New York also has the fourth-lowest percentage of drivers using their phones behind the wheel and ranks near the top when it comes to avoiding other risky driving behaviors.

Apparently, New York teenagers are also getting some decent training. The state has more driving schools per capita than anywhere else in the country. It also ranks third for having the fewest teen DUI arrests per capita, which is one of those statistics you definitely want to see when your kid starts asking for the keys.

Connecticut came in fifth overall. The state ranked fifth for having the fewest teen driver fatalities per capita, which is a pretty significant bright spot. Connecticut did take a major hit when it came to repair costs, though, ranking dead last for the average cost of car repairs.

The study also points out just how expensive teen driving can be. Crashes involving drivers between 13 and 19 reportedly cost around $40.7 billion every year in medical expenses and lost work.

So, congratulations New York and Connecticut. Apparently, we're doing something right when it comes to teaching teenagers how to drive.
