World Atlas just dropped its 2025 list of “6 Main Streets Where Connecticut Comes Alive,” and these are the towns they chose: Essex, Guilford, Ridgefield, Litchfield, Washington, and Mystic.

It’s always nice to see Greater Danbury get a little love on one of these national lists—because let’s face it, that’s a rare thing. But if I may get literal (and maybe a little nitpicky), I need to challenge the phrase “comes alive.”

Are these towns beautiful? Yes. Charming? Without a doubt. Aesthetically pleasing? You bet your ass they are. But if we’re talking about a Main Street that comes alive, none of these places quite hit the mark for me.

When I hear comes alive, I think energy—lights, movement, a little chaos. I’m talking more than eight people walking around after 8 p.m. These towns? Most of them are rolled up and put to bed well before dark.

You want real street life? Take a solo stroll through the heart of Waterbury at 10:30 p.m. on a Saturday. Bring your loved ones for a leisurely walk through Bridgeport or New Haven. Or swing by the Hat City and catch the same woman doing a poopy on Main Street like it’s her full-time job. Not even kidding.

If you're not into that kind of immersive nightlife experience, no worries—you can take a virtual tour through accounts like @WaterburyNutz. Because when our streets come alive, it’s not always in a charming Hallmark-movie kind of way. It’s more like Thriller.

So yes, hats off to World Atlas for highlighting some truly picturesque Main Streets. But if you’re talking about the kind of “alive” that grabs you by the face, Connecticut’s got that too. You’re just looking in the wrong places.
