Connecticut Lawmakers Consider a Possible Ban on The State’s Dirty Love Affair With Nips
Back in 2023, we told you about the nickel-per-nip program.
That is Connecticut's tax program to combat the litter caused by people throwing out their empty little liquor bottles. The idea is the state charges an additional nickel for each nip sold and that money goes back to the municipalities to clean the liquor bottles up. The problem is, some lawmakers don't think it is working.
Now, a new plan has emerged, banning nips in Connecticut. According to the Bangor Daily News:
A bill raised by members of the Legislature’s Environment Committee this week would allow cities and towns to vote to ban the sale of liquor bottles under 50 ml in size, which are often found discarded along roadsides, beaches, public parks and even in people’s yards.
I wish there was another way. I love that we have nips, I love that we call them nips, I'm a nip lover. We could just stop throwing them on the ground and put them in the trash but that does not seem to be working.
Did you know that from October 1, 2022 - March 31, 2023 the City of Bridgeport sold 1.6 million nips? Wait there is more, we consumed our fair share in the greater Danbury area during that time period:
1 - Danbury
- 882,607 nips sold
2 - New Milford
- 391,019 nips sold
3 - Bethel
- 197,734 nips sold
4 - Newtown
- 180,570 nips sold
5 - Brookfield
- 148,315 nips sold
6 - New Fairfield
- 75,001 nips sold
7 - Ridgefield
- 67,676 nips sold
P.S. Why are folks in Bangor writing about Connecticut? I have no problem with it I'm just curious.
