New York Claps Back at Connecticut’s Pizza Capital Claim
Best Pizza New York or Connecticut?
It was only a matter of time.
First, Connecticut declared itself the pizza capital of the United States. Bold move. Then came the signs—actual highway signs—so anyone rolling into the Nutmeg State would be greeted with that saucy claim.

But they didn’t stop there. Oh no. Connecticut doubled down with billboard ads in Manhattan and other proud pizza cities across the country, trolling the entire pizza-making universe like a cocky middle child.
Naturally, the other heavyweight contenders—New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and Detroit—weren’t about to let that slide. And now the backlash has begun.
Just the other day I came across a post from @brooklynbitess titled, “Gio Puts an End to the New York vs. New Haven Pizza Debate!”

Now, I’ve never had the pleasure of tasting Luigi’s Pizza in Brooklyn, but man, that slice looked like a top-tier triangle of triumph. While Gio seems to think he’s ended the debate, let’s be honest: this argument will still be raging when we’re all worm food.
Here’s where I reluctantly enter the chat.
I didn’t want to take sides. I’ve lived in both worlds. I grew up in New York (shoutout to Brewster/Putnam Lake) but I’ve been a proud Connecticut resident for years. And for the longest time, I was perfectly happy enjoying the incredible pies in both states—no conflict, just good crust and good vibes.

But Connecticut had to go and start swinging elbows. Declaring itself the pizza king? Putting up highway signs and billboards? That’s not just pizza pride—that’s a full-on PR campaign. And it’s forced people like me into a corner. A pizza box-shaped corner. And now, I’ve got to choose.
So here it is: New York Pizza is the Best
Sorry, Nutmeg Nation. Your pizza is amazing—truly. New Haven does wonders with charred crust and inventive toppings. But when it comes to consistency, quality, tradition, and straight-up flavor across the board? The Empire State takes the pie.
This isn't over, of course. It never is. But the next time you're in the mood for a slice, just remember: a pizza war might be raging, but we’re all winning. Unless you’re eating frozen pizza—then you’re on your own.
