An arrest has been made in the case of a fatal car accident that happened on I-84 in Newtown last May.

According to a press release from the Connecticut State Police, 19-year-old Michael Alan Vitti of Sandy Hook turned himself in yesterday (March 5) on an arrest warrant stemming from the accident he was involved in on May 30, 2017.

At the time of the accident, 64-year-old Gerard Mauskapf of Red Hook, NY pulled his 2014 Ford Fusion over to the right shoulder of the ramp on I-84 where exit 11 curves before splitting toward Route 34 and Sandy Hook respectively.

As he exited his car, police say Vitti became distracted and headed into the right shoulder of the ramp, fatally striking Mauskapf. The cause of Vitti's distraction was not mentioned by police, however they did specify that it was not a cell phone.

Michael Alan Vitti has been charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, failure to drive in a proper lane, and distracted driving. He posted bond and will appear in court on March 20.
