The decline of the Enfield Square Mall began in August 2000 when JCPenney closed its doors as part of a nationwide closure of unprofitable stores. Over the past 24 years, the Enfield Mall has witnessed a steady stream of store closures due to a decreasing number of shoppers.

Four malls in Connecticut are in danger of going belly up. According to Hearst CT Media, they are the Enfield Square in Enfield, the Crystal Mall in Waterford, the Meriden Mall, and the  Brass Mill Center in Waterbury.

Since May 2024, the future of Enfield Mall has remained uncertain, balancing on the edge between potential failure and survival. Originally opened in 1971, the mall featured three anchor stores: G. Fox, JCPenney, and Steiger's. A YouTube video titled "Enfield Square Mall: A Not So Merry Dead Mall Christmas Story," produced by 'Fleabitten Adventures' and released on December 25, 2024, provides an in-depth look at this Connecticut mall that is on the brink of closure.
