The Naugatuck Police Department has just announced the arrest of a 41-year-old woman from Waterbury on charges stemming from a fatal accident that occurred in town last year, on October 11, 2020.

According to a press release we just received from the Naugatuck Police Department, Joie Cascella, 41 of Deepwood Drive in Waterbury was placed under arrest by the NPD after a nearly 5 month long investigation into a fatal two car accident that occurred in October of last year on North Church Street (Rt. 63), near the intersection with Mill Street. During the investigation, it was determined that Cascella crossed the center line while driving along Rt. 63 and hit an oncoming vehicle head-on, being driven by Carol Gironda, of Quinn St. in Naugatuck. Gironda suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in Gironda's vehicle also suffered significant injuries as a result of the collision.

The investigating officers - The Naugatuck Valley Collision Investigation Team were lead by Naugatuck Police Department Sgt. Matthew Savoy who was also assisted by officers from Cheshire, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Plymouth, Watertown, and Wolcott.

Cascella has been taken into custody and faces numerous charges:

  • 2nd Degree Manslaughter with a Motor Vehicle
  • 2nd Degree Assault with a Motor Vehicle
  • Illegal Operation of a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs
  • Reckless Driving
  • Failure to Drive in Proper lane
  • Traveling Unreasonably Fast

Cascella was being held on a $500,000 bond, and will appear in Waterbury Superior Court today, March 4, to face the Judge.
