Want a Sandwich in the Slammer? Middletown Has a Jail-Themed Restaurant

Today is "National Sandwich Day" (11/3), a day that, according to National Day, is believed to be the namesake of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. This guy claims that he sort of came up with the very first "sandwich", or at least his chef did.

To be clear, people had been eating the bread and meat combo way before the name came about. John Montagu had seen Greeks and Turks eating these types of food items on a trip to the Mediterranean and simply had his peeps copy those peeps. The ease of eating it was what intrigued the Earl of Sandwich because he was a hard-core gambler and these particularly prepared morsels allowed him to have one hand free to do his favorite activity. All of that occurred around 1762, fast forward to 1815 and that is the first appearance of the "sandwich" in the States when it was published in an American cookbook.

In honor of National Sandwich Day, we found a unique restaurant in Middletown, Connecticut called Harrie's Jailhouse which is located in the historic 1850s Pameacha Jail. Not only is it a cool, upscale-themed bar/restaurant now, but it is also purportedly haunted. Wow, what a bonus.

According to an article by Exemplore News, the Pameacha Jail was featured on an episode of Ghost Hunters about 10 years ago adding to the overall mystique of the place and vibe. The lore is that the restaurant/house/jail is haunted by a little girl named Sarah with several sightings on the property being reported. Who knows, but it is certainly a unique place to visit and have a sandwich on "National Sandwich Day", check it out.
