The Renovation is Complete at Danbury High School
The Renovation is Complete at Danbury High School.
It’s back to school for almost all of our local school kids in Connecticut. Danbury High School students are being welcomed back to a state-of-the-art, 21st century school facility. The $50 million expansion includes a 63,000 square foot addition with 24 freshman classrooms, a free-standing black box theater, and a new glass-faced entrance among other improvements. Danbury High is the state’s largest high school with over 3,100 students. The project took two years and was completed on time and under budget. According to the Danbury News Times, Principal Dan Donovan said the freshman class will spend almost three-quarters of its schedule in the new wing, which is designed to give students their own “freshman academy” to help them adjust to the high school experience.
While Danbury students are enjoying their new digs, Nonnewaug High School in Region 14 is still under construction, delaying the first day of school to September 6. According to the region’s renovation project website, the $63.8 million renovation plan includes programmatic improvements to areas including Liberal Arts, STEM, Visual & Performing Arts, and Athletic areas along with updating HVAC, electrical, plumbing and safety features. The transformation is due to be completed by 2020.
Stratford High School is also renovating. The project website notes that the reno is being done “in an effort to renovate and extend the current facility to meet the 21st century learning environment needed to educate today’s students.”
Expansion plans are usually tough discussions in surrounding towns due to budget constraints. I’m sure that Danbury high-schoolers are happy that the renovation is finished and excited to enjoy all of the many improvements.
