The Fascinating History of the Merwinsville Hotel in the Town of Gaylordsville
For 50 years during the 1800s, the New Milford village of Gaylordsville had an identity crisis. Its name kept flipping back and forth between Gaylordsville and Merwinsville, based on whether the Gaylords or the Merwins were in charge of the post office.
The Gaylord family founded the small village in 1725, when surveyor William Gaylord trekked the 7 miles from New Milford north, along the hills containing the Housatonic River, to the flat area that later became Gaylordsville.
