Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton has allocated a $4 million increase in the new budget for Danbury city schools, but school officials say it's not enough.

From an article in the NewsTimes comes word that school officials asked for a $7 million increase which they need to just maintain the 'status quo' because of increasing enrollment.

Mayor Mark appeared on our show Thursday morning here on I-95 where Lou and I asked him to comment on the concerns of Danbury School officials who were concerned they weren't receiving enough money from the city. He explained to us that he upped the school budget by $4 million plus the state will be sending the schools $1.8 million in grants which he stated should be enough to fund teacher and staff raises. Mayor Boughton told teachers in the council chambers,

Understand that each and every year our tax rate has gone up, and 50% of the children that come to your classroom live below the poverty line. That means their parents who live below the poverty line are being asked to pay more each year, so we have to be sensitive in balancing that."

The Mayor also criticized the state for not adequately financing the growing school district. In the Niche.com national school ratings, Danbury scored an overall grade of B-. In the category of Most Diverse School Districts in Connecticut, Danbury was near the top at #3.
