Officials Say West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquitos in 8 CT Towns, Including Westport

According to Metro 24/7 News and the Patch, officials say they found mostquitos that were positive for West Nile Virus in Westport, Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, Stamford, Stratford, Hartford and New Haven.

So what do we lower the risk of getting the disease? The folks from the state (CT.Gov) have provided answers to keep you safe, courtesy of Connecticut Mosquito Management.

How can I lower my risk to West Nile virus?
You should try to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. If West Nile virus is found in your area, you should:

• Minimize time spent outdoors around dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
• Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good repair.
• Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are most active. Clothing should be light-colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin.
• Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect small babies when outdoors.
• Consider the use of mosquito repellent, according to label instructions, when it is necessary to be outdoors.

TRANSLATION: Hide as often as possible and if you have to go outside where a HAZMAT suit.

The only thing worse than the West Nile news out of Westport are the prices to get into Compo Beach.
