The Haunting Legend of ‘Midnight Mary’ at Evergreen Cemetery in CT
Have you ever had an extrasensory experience with some being that still hasn't passed over?
The story is told of a woman named Mary Hart who passed away in 1872 and was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. From an article in the New Haven Register comes the urban legend that Mary Hart known as "Midnight Mary" was beginning her chores at high noon when she fell to the ground. She wasn't found until midnight and was presumed dead so her family laid her to rest in Evergreen Cemetery. But, was she really dead?
The story goes that her aunt awoke from a terrible nightmare where she dreamed Mary was not dead and was buried alive. Her aunt convinced the rest of the family to exhume the body and when they opened the coffin found that her fingernails were bloodied because she had been trying to claw her way out before suffocating to death. On her tombstone was written:
THE PEOPLE SHALL BE TROUBLED AT MIDNIGHT AND PASS AWAY AND THE MIGHTY SHALL BE TAKEN AWAY WITHOUT HAND.
Fast forward to the winter of 1999 when the cemetery's general manager, Don Fiore gets a call from the alarm company about the security alarm going off. Yes, it happened to be a 'dark and stormy night' plus it was freezing cold. He looked around in the fierce darkness and noticed that not one police car had answered the alarm. As he jumped in his car and tried to leave the cemetery, his car wouldn't move. He said it felt like 'something' was holding the car back. When he looked at his car radio, he noticed the clock had just gone from 11:59 pm to12 midnight.
